The Department of Special Collections is home to a wide array of rare books, manuscripts, archival collections, photographs and audio-visual items, maps, architectural drawings, artists’ books, zines, photographic collections, and other research materials that document the history of Florida, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and beyond.

The Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) was established in 2004 with nine (9) founding partners, five from the Caribbean and four from the United States. Today, twenty years later, dLOC has grown to over ninety (90) Partners and over forty (40) Associate Partners, who are based in the Caribbean, Canada, Europe, and the United States. Its operational hubs are at the University of Florida, which leads on the technical and administrative infrastructure, and Florida International University, which leads on outreach in South Florida and collaborates on certain administrative tasks.
